Take A Deeper Look

We are witnessing a paradigm shift in Medicine currently as the discipline of Functional Medicine is brought to the forefront. It is growing by leaps and bounds; it seems it has become a “movement”.

Why is it such a compelling idea? There have lots of new things that have come and gone over the years, but the Functional Medicine is resonating with so many people that I truly believe it is here to stay.

And why? Because it looks to get to the root cause of what is going on with a person to cause their symptoms or condition rather than just, as a colleague of mine says, “Name it, blame it and Tame it”. Particularly true in chronic conditions, it is insufficient just to determine a name and reflexively give the drug or treatment. Better to reflect on why it happened, and to try to understand the unique factors that came to play in that particular person to create the conditions that allowed for this to occur. These factors are myriad and include genetic, environmental, nutritional, toxin and stress-related issues, etc. once these factors are identified, steps can be taken to change the conditions that rendered the person susceptible and help steer a different course.

I was struck recently by the analogy between this description of our medical system and our current political situation. We have become experts at “naming and blaming” and increasingly poor at trying to understand the underlying conditions that have caused people to hold on so violently to their opinions. Gone, it seems, is any attempt to try to understand a different viewpoint or understand the reasons someone would hold a particular opinion. Easier, perhaps to hate the person who holds a different point of view.

Wouldn’t it be better to take a step back and try to look at and understand the root causes? We didn’t arrive at the current situation in our country by chance; there have been factors in play for a long time that have set the stage for what we are now witnessing. In Functional medicine, we call these the antecedents….then there are the triggers and the mediators which exist in our national political situation as well.

But we will never get to a place of wellbeing in the country if we don’t take a look at the underlying factors and try to return the system to balance. We can only do this by understanding where the imbalance occurred.
